I’ll be honest: the rarest cards in the new Eevee Grove expansion for Pokemon Pocket are kind of a letdown. The immersive rare and rainbow rares just don’t hit the same way earlier ex cards like Gengar ex, Zapdos ex, or Darkrai ex did. I’m not here to trash on artists—Asako Ito is one of my all-time favorites—but this set proves that rarity doesn’t always equal quality. What really shine are the one-star full-art cards for Eevee and each of its evolutions. Those? Those I can get behind.
Every one-star full-art in this expansion perfectly captures the personality of its Eeveelution. Jolteon bursts with lightning bolts, Umbreon prowls moonlit city streets, and the rest follow a similar approach—Flareon, Vaporeon, Leafeon, Glaceon, Espeon, and Sylveon each get artwork that feels tailor-made. It’s the kind of attention to detail that makes me forget about the flashy rainbow rares entirely. The artist Akira Egawa can be divisive, but here the simpler designs win me over. I’d rather chase these commons than the gold “backpack” Eevee that looks out of place.
Since going free-to-play, I’ve struggled to keep up with the game’s relentless release schedule. Before, I could spend pack points on alt arts I liked; now I have to prioritize trainers I need for decks. Eevee Grove is a breather. The one-star cards are far more common, so I can actually complete this set without emptying my wallet. Once I’m done, I plan to go back and finish older expansions—Celestial Guardians, Shining Revelry, and Area Zero. Finally, I can catch up.
What really caught me off guard is that DeNA chose to include Flareon (one of the less popular Eeveelutions) and skipped the coveted Moonbreon entirely. Sylveon gets a rainbow rare, sure, but the artwork doesn’t impress me enough to care. It feels out of character for a game designed to maximize spending—why not print a rare Moonbreon? I’m guessing that card might show up behind a premium paywall later, but for now I’m grateful for a relatively easy set. Art is subjective, and these one-star full-arts are my kind of beauty. Thanks, DeNA. I’ll take the breather.
